I once sat in a makeshift studio in someone’s living room where I was sleeping on the couch with $20 & no resources. I had a particular set of skills - not to be confused with THAT particular set of skills from that particular movie - and I didn’t know what the hell I could be doing with them. At some point I asked myself what the world of music needed from me. When I got no answer, I decided to ask the world of music itself what it needed from me. Nothin but wind chimes (I live in the country). I asked the spirits, muses, God, or whatever entity might care to listen. Not even a “F**k you, stop asking!” Not being a quitter (aka being a relentless idiot) I decided to offer what I could to whoever came to me. I became a Music Mercenary. In the process, I sharpened that particular set of skills to the point of mastery. Sometimes deliberate. Most times reckless, accidental, and flat out painful. But I didn’t die (at least not fully). Unfortunately (or fortunately?), the people I was serving began falling away. They were falling further and further out of alignment with…whatever the f**k I was becoming. Many of them flat out quit. Eventually the only person left to serve was…me. The relentless idiot. At least I knew I wasn’t gonna quit on me. And I haven't. I’m still idioting my way through life until I cross paths with someone looking for a hired gun in audio. Someone looking for a Music Mercenary. I suppose I’ll still be an idiot but I’ll be a paid one at least.
