Creatures of Comfort began with a conversation in 2022. Scotty Atherton (Guitars) and Luis Luna (bass) had been looking for someone to jam with and a mutual friend suggested his work colleague, Andrew Tilby (former member of NZ band Breathe), might be keen. Turns out, he was right. The three got together with keyboard player Monique Laurie, ( under the name Coalescence) and started to jam in Scotty’s garage. What started out as an excuse to drink a few beers soon morphed into a desire to take things a little further than a once a month practice. A sound started to evolve - a mix of indie and rock with influences from The War on Drugs, Midnight Oil and New Wave eighties bands like New Order. Drummer, Heath Menefy, joined the band and Creatures of Comfort began. After Monique left in 2022, Logan Callesen took over the keys and the band played shows in Tauranga, including the Jam Factory and Totara St from late 2023 to 2024. After tracking a bunch of demo songs on Garageband they decided to invest in some recording equipment and largely self-recorded a debut EP. During this time, Logan decided he had too many life balls to juggle and said his goodbyes. Thankfully, his keys grace the first Creatures recording. Drums and some vocals were tracked at Mike O’Meeghan’s studio. Local mixing legend, Nathan Sowter, managed to take the raw tracks and give them some much needed polish and four tracks were ready to be released on the first Creatures of Comfort EP, ‘The Great Unknown’
